Connecticut Not Regulating Casino Gambling Properly

The state of Connecticut is threatening to take what is left of the casino gambling business away from Atlantic City. That does not mean, however, that the state has done a good job monitoring casino gambling.

A state-ordered study has concluded that Connecticut casinos are indeed booming, but that the state is not doing a good job of regulating the industry. Changes are needed to help slow the growth of problem gambling.

"The goal was to take a look at the good, bad, and ugly of gambling in the state," said Michael Diamond, Vice president of Research for the Spectrum Gaming Group of New jersey, "We had to go back to 1997 to find a study like this, so we wanted to give a comprehensive look at gambling in Connecticut since then."

Casino growth has meant job growth in the state, according to the study. Twelve percent of the state's new jobs have been created by either Foxwoods or the Mohegan Sun since 1992. That is a large percentage when considering most companies have been laying off workers in the past year.

The state revenue from the casinos has also grown over the past decade. The majority of the revenue growth has to do with additional gaming services and renovations at already existing gaming facilities at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

"We concluded that there should be more state gambling regulation there," said Diamond, while summing up the findings of the report. The regulations, according to the report, are needed to ensure that problem gambling does not grow along with the gambling revenue.
