Construction Company Cleared In Monte Carlo Casino Fire

The Monte Carlo Casino did not get their year off to a good start in January when a fire ripped through the top of the casino in Las Vegas. Originally, the construction company that was working on the casino was fined $18,000 by the Nevada Safety and Health Administration.

Now, almost a full year after the blaze, the construction company has been cleared of guilt, and their fine has been dropped to $3,500. This comes after the review board for the Administration overturned earlier findings of the fire department and members of their own staff.

"We do not know what did (cause the fire), but that's somebody else's burden of proof," said attorney Bruce Willoughby. He was representing United Erectors at the hearing.

The review board was convinced by the arguments that United Erector employees made against the allegations that were levied towards them by the investigators. Of the fines for citations, all but one were eliminated.

More important than the fines was the clearing of the construction company by the safety board. It clears the company fully for any wrongdoing in the fire.

The fire created damage that cost $80 million in damages to the Monte Carlo. The casino had closed for a while, before finally re-opening and having patrons once again inside.
