Court Overturns Casino Boat Ban - Law Likely to Stand

Gambling bans enacted by Georgetown County Council in 2002 were overturned Monday by the South Carolina Supreme Court. That?s because thanks to the General Assembly, County Council was able to adopt another ordinance last year that applies tougher regulations to gambling boats docking in county waters for "cruises to nowhere".

"The county?s first ordinance banning casino boat operations was challenged by Wallace Cheves, a Greenville businessman who wanted to operate the Palmetto Princess at Murrells Inlet. He was also involved in the video poker industryIn the wake of a successful lower-court challenge, Georgetown County Council adopted another ordinance, regulating casino boat operations. Once the South Carolina General Assembly passed a law allowing counties and municipalities to ban or regulate casino boat gambling, Georgetown County adopted the 2005 ordinance prohibiting day cruises for gambling or "cruises to nowhere."
