Cowlitz Tribe Increases the Ante In Casino Sweepstakes
One day after two Oregon entrepreneurs redoubled their effort to put a commercial casino in the Portland area, the Cowlitz tribe held its own casino-boosting party. Although the gathering was in Vancouver, the tribe wants to build the casino a bit north of there, near La Center. About 200 tribal, business and community leaders and other supporters gathered at the Red Lion At The Quay to explain their vision and push for support. There are currently three groups trying to bring casinos closer to Portland.
The private entrepreneurs may have the biggest uphill battle, since they need a ballot initiative to make it happen, and their previous efforts have been held up by the Oregon Attorney General's office. But they might also have the most to gain by succeeding; they want to put it at the site of the old Multnomah Greyhound Park in the Wood Village area, right on Portland's outskirts. Meanwhile, the Warm Springs Tribe wants to close its Kahneeta Resort casino north of Madras, and build a bigger one in Cascade Locks, about 40 miles east of Portland near one of Oregon's biggest tourist attractions, Multnomah Falls.
Until a few years ago, Multnomah Falls was the biggest attraction, but yet another casino, the Spirit Mountain Casino at Grand Ronde has surpassed it. So the stakes are high, the money is big, and the fight is on. Everyone wants to siphon more money from the lucrative gambling market. Each player is betting big to try to win the jackpot.
