Delaware Casino Owners Take Offense To Governor's Gambling Plans
The Governor of Delaware, Jack Markell, has big plans for his state when it comes to the future of gambling. Not only is he looking to bring sports gambling to the state, but he also wants more casinos.
These plans are being met with heavy criticism from existing casino owners. They are fearful that Markell's plan could hurt the future of their businesses.
"We'd be thrown into dangerous economic conditions and that would jeopardize our long term viability and could lead to layoffs and no more expansions,' said CEO of Dover Downs Hotel and Casino, Ed Sutor.
The governor is has proposed to increase the current tax on casinos by almost eight percent. He also would like to see three new casinos in Delaware. Markell believes the casinos can handle the increase in taxes.
"These are folks who make a lot of money and run a successful business and it's time for the people of Delaware to get the best deal possiblie,' said Markell.
Sports gambling is another issue that Markell feels strongly about. He has a proposal that would legalize parlay bets in the state. The plan has been gaining momentum in the state legislature.
Casino owners are not against the plan, except for the part where ten locations are licensed for sports betting. They would like only existing casinos to be allowed to offer the sports betting.
