Detroit Casino Finally Phases Out Metal Currency
The Greektown Casino in Detroit, Michigan has announced that after 11:59 PM on Thursday, the casino will no longer allow customers to redeem slot machine tokens for money. The downtown casino converted to coinless slot machines last year and has given a lengthy grace period for gamblers holding on to the old coins.
Greektown Casino switched to coinless slot-machines as a convenience to their customers. No longer does a gambler walk around the Greektown casino with a bucket full of tokens.
According to casino officials, gamblers have returned over 42,000 bags of tokens, weighing more than 1 million pounds and worth $3 million dollars. In the near future, a metal shredder will be brought in to grind the tokens into metal waste. If you don't redeem your tokens for cash by Thursday night, you'll be keeping the tokens as souvenirs and momentos.
