Detroit Casinos Nearing Contract Deadline With Workers

This weekend is going to be tiresome for negotiators between Detroit's three casinos and the union for the workers they employ, as the clock is ticking on a contract that will expire on Tuesday at 11:59 P.M.

Negotiations are set to be taking place throughout the weekend and both sides are hopeful a deal can be in place before the old deal expires.

Union members do not seem ready to budge on their demands as they have voted to allow their negotiators to call a strike if necessary, and that means that 6,100 workers will be left without incomes.

That also means that the three casinos could have a lot of jobs to fill come Wednesday morning, certainly a situation that all parties involved would like to avoid.

The only area not affected by the negotiations are the managers, as almost all of the other areas of the casinos are represented by five labor unions.

The three casinos, MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown, and Motor City, have all admitted negotiations are going on, but as of now there is no progress to be reported, which means a strike could be imminent.

As reported in The Detroit News, a spokesman was asked if the workers were preparing picket signs for a strike, and the response was, "We're not at that stage yet."

The two sides will work feverishly as the deadline for the old contract approaches.
