Dodge City Realizes Dream Of Casino Gambling In Kansas

It has been several years since Kansas residents voted in favor of bringing casino gambling to the state. On Tuesday afternoon, that dream was finally realized when the Boot Hill Casino & Resort opened in Dodge City.

The casino had been the only one of four state-owned casinos that was even in the construction stage. The other three approved zones have had problems securing deals with developers. All three zones had deals in place, but developers walked away after the credit collapse.

Boot Hill had to go through the customary pre-opening presentations in front of members of the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission. They passed all of those tests, and the Commission signed off on a final certificate allowing the casino to begin operations.

"We have been waiting for a long time to have a casino where we can go and get out of the house for some entertainment," said Barry Greenberg, who was at the opening of Boot Hill with his wife, "From what we have seen so far, this is a top of the line facility."

While Boot Hill brings joy to Dodge City, the other three zones are still waiting for developers to be picked or construction to begin. Kansas officials hope that all of the casinos are open by 2011.

Boot Hill will be closing their doors unusually early tonight, at 11PM. In the morning, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony involving Governor Mark Parkinson.
