Downtown Las Vegas May Get First New Casino In Thirty Years

Las Vegas is moving closer towards getting their first downtown casino in nearly thirty years. The casino would be built in Union Park, but there is still one major hurdle for developers to cross over before the casino becomes reality.

Forest City must build a new city hall before they can begin construction on the casino. The new city hall is no slam dunk, with several high ranking officials against the building.

"There's no reason whatsoever that they can't sell that land right now and get cash into a budget that is in a deficit. We reject the premise that you have to build a brand new city hall to have a new casino downtown," said Chris Bonner, Research Director for Culinary Local 226.

The current plan for downtown is to redevelop the area and make it a source of revenue for the city. The way to do that, however, is what is being called into question by leaders in the community.

Among the concern of city leaders is the union that is pushing against the new city hall. The leaders are worried that the union is posturing in order to secure labor talks between themselves and the developer of the downtown projects.

If built, the casino would be forty seven story's high. It would be more of a resort style and would have all the amenities that casinos around the country are being built with these days.
