Education Goal Met By NC Gambling Lottery For First Time
North Carolina had high expectations when it came to a state gambling lottery. They expected people to spend large amounts of money and had lofty goals of how much money would be generated.
Today it was revealed that for the first time ever, the state has reached their goal for a fiscal year from the lottery. The fiscal year ended on Monday, and the North Carolina Education Lottery gave the state $350,012,385.
Legislators had planned on receiving $350 million from the lottery. The figure just barely cleared that hurdle, but nonetheless did reach expectations for the first time in the lottery's history.
"We'd always like more, but the lottery is doing what we have expected," said Rep. Bill Owens from Pasquotank. It is only the second full year of operation for the lottery, but hitting their goal is a good sign.
In the first year, the lottery missed expectations by over twenty five percent. A recent change to scratch off tickets that allowed the lottery to give out more prizes has helped a boost in sales.
Lottery workers are also excited about reaching expectations. "I think what they've achieved is a level of satisfaction about what they are contributing to the state of North Carolina," said lottery executive director, Tom Shaheen.
