Electronic Bingo Gambling Cards Now Available In New York

Joanna Richardson simply wanted to be allowed to play bingo like any other person without the chance of being cheated. That is why Richardson, who was born blind, took her battle to the New York state Racing and Wagering Board.

Her goal was to have audible electronic bingo cards available so that when she won, the card would alert her of her win. It was a battle that began with many e-mails and letters, but ended with her winning for the rights of all blind bingo players.

"You have the control over the majority of what's going on now," said Richardson of the new audible bingo cards, "You don't feel like you're throwing your money away. You know when you're waiting and you know when you won. You can't be cheated."

After receiving all of the e-mails and letters, the Racing and Wagering Board decided last week that Richardson had a valid point. They changed the rules and now bingo halls can have bingo cards that beep when a player wins and also when they have only one number left for a bingo.

The fear for the Board was that the sounds would create a casino-like atmosphere. They did not want the bingo halls turning into casinos, but after listening to Richardson's gripes, they changed their minds.

She's proof that an ordinary citizen can grapple with a problem they face from government and make the changes that can really help people," said Joe Mahoney, a spokesman for the Racing and Wagering agency.
