Evergreen Seeks Resort Casino in Mountains of Maine
The group Evergreen Mountain Enterprises wants to build a casino gambling resort in the mountains of Western Maine. Three years ago, Mainers rejected the idea of allowing casino gambling, but that's not stopping Evergreen from rolling the dice again.
Evergreen kicked off a petition drive to put the proposal before voters this November.
The group, headed up by Rumford native Seth Carey, says the new casino would create thousands of jobs and will feature a hotel, outdoor sporting complex, a winery, shops and a spa.
In 2003, Mainers voted 2 to 1 against allowing casino gambling in Sanford. But Carey says his project will appeal to voters because a portion of the profits will go to state programs.
The group is looking for investors and a location for the casino. They have until next April to collect more than 5 thousand signatures.
