The deadline was Wednesday for development groups to submit their application to obtain the final available casino license in Missouri. At the end of the day, there were five groups that applied and will now square off in the bidding war.
Sugar Creek had two developers place applications to run a casino in the Kansas City area. One of the applicants wants to build a casino in Cape Girardeau, and the final two are from the St. Louis area, where casino gambling is already prevalent.
Among the groups that applied were gaming veterans Isle of Capri and Casino Celebration. North County Development, Epic Gaming, and Sunway Gaming were the other three proposals that came in on Wednesday. The biggest casino proposal came from North County, with a plan to build a $350 casino resort.
The license came open earlier this year when Pinnacle Entertainment agreed to relinquish the license of the President Casino. The President was on the Admiral riverboat, and the boat was not expected to pass inspection of the Coast Guard.
Originally, Pinnacle was prepared to fight the Gaming Board for the rights to the license, but cooler heads prevailed. The Gaming Board agreed to drop any outstanding past bills in exchange for the compromise. Pinnacle owns other casinos in St. Louis, and it was expected that they were going to apply again for the license, but they did not.
Missouri currently has twelve casinos that are operational. The thirteenth would put them in the upper echelon as far as states go with casino gambling. In addition to Missouri, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, California, West Virginia, and Delaware have made the strongest push into the casino industry in recent years.
