Flamingo Casino in Las Vegas Hosts $50,000 Beer Pong Tournament
Las Vegas prides itself on being hip. They seek out events that have a strong following and they roll out the red carpet for those events. This weekend, it was a beer pong tournament that took center stage.
The Flamingo Hotel Casino played host to a $50,000 beer pong tournament that featured 400 of the strongest teams from across the country. The beer was flowing and the music was loud.
The game of beer pong has mixed reviews around the US. It has become a favorite game of college students, but the people who run those colleges fear that it promotes binge drinking. Several colleges have banned the game from their campuses.
"The game of beer pong is not about getting drunk. It is about competition. We play the game more for the thrill of victory and being the best than for getting a buzz," said college student and beer pong team member Greg Simmons.
The tournament at the Flamingo is a culmination of smaller competitions that happened throughout 2008. Bars in many states were holding weekly tournaments that led to monthly tournaments. Eventually, the winners of these bar games won trips to the big tournament in Las Vegas.
The Flamingo is not the only casino welcoming contestants from The World Series of Beer Pong. Other casinos have set up beer pong tables, some of which will remain in place even after the weekend has ended.
