Foxwoods Casino Bartenders Say No To Union Representation
The dealers at Foxwoods Resort Casino joined forces with the United auto Workers back in November of 2007. They had a difficult time getting management at Foxwoods to acknowledge them, but finally were able to begin negotiations for better working conditions last year.
The fact that even with the negotiations there is no contract in place could be the reason that bartenders at Foxwoods decided against unionization on Wednesday. The vote was 207-133.
The workers still have the right to unionize at a later date, and many of the workers that voted in favor of joining a union expect that will be the case. The dealers are currently the only group of workers that have union representation at Foxwoods.
The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union would have been the group that represented the bartenders had they chosen to unionize. The group represents around 10,000 workers in Massachusetts and Connecticut already.
The dealer negotiations began last November and only reached a bargaining point when the union agreed to bargain under tribe laws, and not US laws. The negotiations are ongoing and the dealers hope to have a contract in place in the near future.
