Foxwoods Eyeing Downtown Location For New Casino In Philadelphia
Foxwoods is bringing a new casino to Pennsylvania, it's just a matter of where that new casino is going to be located. They originally wanted to build in South Philly, but now they have shifted their plan.
The Foxwoods group has been receiving a lot of opposition about their possible casino project in South Philadelphia. after considering their options, the group has now turned their attention to downtown Philly, just miles from where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.
The location that the group has targeted is the a downtown mall called The Gallery at Market East. The company that owns The Gallery has been contacted by the Foxwoods group about potentially taking over.
"This is a serious proposal that will get serious consideration," said Mayor Michael Nutter. One of the concerns is how citizens will feel having a casino near one of the most historic areas in the United States. Nutter claims that will not be an issue.
The state Gaming Board will have to be consulted and give their approval in order for Foxwoods to switch their locations. They also must receive city approval.
Of course, there are people who would rather the casino did not exist at all. "You're not going to get more tourists for a city that's known for two things, which is history and gun violence, by bringing a casino to downtown," said Spokesman for the group Casino-Free Philadelphia, Daniel Hunter.
