Foxwoods, MGM, And Mohegan Sun Casinos Lose Slot Revenue Again
The Connecticut casinos had envisioned taking customers away from Atlantic City when they joined forces this past summer on a billboard campaign on the New Jersey Turnpike. So far, they have not seen the fruits of that endeavor.
Foxwoods, MGM Grand, and Mohegan Sun all had a decrease in slot revenue in November. That is according to figures that have been released by the two tribes that operate the casinos. The overall loss was two percent from the same period a year before.
The Mohegan Tribe reported the worst news of the day. Their Mohegan Sun casino had slot revenue of $59.6 million in November. That was down eleven percent from the same period in 2008, and down five percent from October of 2009.
The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe had slot revenue at Foxwoods and MGM Grand of $53.7. That figure represented a two percent drop from revenue in October, and a 1.4% dip from November of 2008. Combined, it was a tough month for all parties involved.
The Connecticut casinos would like to believe that help is on the way, but it may only get worse. Casino expansion in Pennsylvania has hurt business at Connecticut casinos, and on Tuesday there was potentially more bad news delivered to the state's casino industry.
The Shinnecock Tribe in New York moved closer to bringing another casino to the Northeast. The US Department of the Interior suggested federal recognition for the tribe. If they receive final approval, that would open the door for a casino the Shinnecocks have been trying to build since 2003.
