Gambling Among Students Increasing Survey Says
A biennial survey of Nebraska students says more and more of them are gambling, starting at an average age of 10 or even younger. Laurie Sutter, a state behavioral health prevention manager, said there may be a number of reasons for the increase since 2003:Experts say the rush students get from gambling can ultimately reroute brain circuits and lead to a predisposition to addictions.
Nebraska Commissioner of Education Doug Christensen said the survey shows that as other risk behaviors rise, so does gambling, echoing studies that show problem gambling is associated with alcohol and drug use, truancy and low grades.
