Gambling Cash Might Pave Road for Buyers
By the June 2 deadline, the city of Lawrenceburg had received 48 grant applications for its regional economic development grant program. The grants will be funded by gambling revenues the city receives from the Argosy Casino on the Ohio River.
And when talk turns to a potential major regional employer, such as the Honda Motors facility that is reportedly eyeing a site near Greensburg for a major new assembly plant, then the money is going to follow that kind of development opportunity. City manager Tom Steidel is still tallying the requests, but he believes the total will exceed $20 million.
"The applications all came in the last three days. We got 30 on (June 1) and 15 on (June 2)," Steidel said. "I'm surprised there weren't more. We've been on the other side without enough money and we share their pain," Todd said.
