The major party candidates for Ohio governor agree on one thing: Neither one wants expanded gambling. Friday, Democrat Ted Strickland, in an interview with The Enquirer, and Republican Ken Blackwell, through a spokesman, said the Buckeye State should not join neighboring states and legalize slot machines at casinos or horse tracks. Their comments come in the wake of a proposal this week to build a 300-room hotel with up to 3,500 slot machines at Cincinnati's Broadway Commons, at Broadway and Reading Road.

A group called Queen City Gaming Entertainment filed a petition with the attorney general Wednesday, an initial step in seeking a statewide vote Nov. 7 to legalize slot machines in Cincinnati, Cleveland and seven horse tracks. Strickland, a congressman from Lisbon in northeast Ohio, called it distasteful that slot-machine proponents are trying to promote expanded gambling by offering college scholarships with part of the revenues.

He said there are bettor ways to make attending Ohio colleges more affordable.
