Gambling Help Lines Doing Good Job Comforting Florida Callers
The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling is expecting to see an increase in gambling addiction calls to a twenty-four hour help line, and it appears the phone line operators are doing a good job. Gambling options are about to rise in the state, which makes it almost certain that more people will be seeking help.
While many of these problem gambling help lines are used by anti-gambling groups to show how gambling addiction is on the rise, proponents of expanded gambling are actually using the figures to show how well the problems can be dealt with. Many states have set up these help lines and they are working as a first step in gambling addiction recovery.
"Frequently we read reports of how gambling addiction is rising in an area because of expanded gambling," said observer Kelly Brence, "but the truth is that people are just more open to seeking help then they used to be, so they are turning to these help lines to assist them in dealing with a potential problem."
Considering the hundreds of thousands of people that gamble in Florida, the 14,000 calls made to the help line in fiscal year 2008 is actually low. Twelve percent of these gamblers claim that the state-run lottery is fueling their gambling problem.
The economy is another reason more people are calling for help. Eleven percent of people that were called were business owners, and most of these business owners turned to gambling to try and beat the tough economic times.
