Gambling Issue In Massachusetts Could Determine Politicians' Fate
The state of Massachusetts is at a crossroads when it comes to casino gambling. There are not many people in the grey area of this debate, most are either for or against the expanded gambling.
For three politicians, their stances on the issue could have a severe impact on whether they win their election or not. Republican Representative Paul Loscocco is on his way out, and the three people who could replace him have very different opinions.
Carolyn C. Dykema of Holliston does not believe that casinos would help the state and its' budget. "I don't see any compelling arguments. I see the discussion as a distraction," she said. She would like to focus more on health care and transportation issues, but the truth is that the casino gambling issue is a very real one.
One of her opponents, Edward J. Mills of Hopkinton, has the support of the labor unions. He is in favor of the casinos and claims that the jobs that would be created are the main reason the issue should be re-examined.
Then there is Daniel P. Haley from Holliston. He does not yet have an opinion on the issue. He believes the topic needs much more study and discussion, but did say, "I will have an open mind and am willing to listen."
The growing consensus in the state is that casino gambling could be a major help to both the budget and the economic future of many of its residents. Whatever their stance may end up being, it is clear that the casino gambling issue will play a key role in getting one of them elected.
