Gambling Licenses Issued by Iowa Gaming Commission
The recent announcement by the Iowa Gaming Commission that it will issue a land-based casino license to Burlington suggests that there is perceived room for such additional establishments not withstanding the 17 previously state-authorized and three Indian casinos.
As an earlier report by the Des Moines Register had stated that $8 billion was wagered at Iowa casinos and on Lottery games in the seven months July 05-Jan. 06, even greater sums must be anticipated to be available for our gambling proclivities.
Clearly, the glitz of the casino beckons the gamblers among us, though reality may be different from the external appearance. Upwards of $1 billion was left behind at the casinos last year. While lucky winners may be featured in advertisements, the losers are never depicted. The losers, of course, who make up the great majority of casino patrons, provide the profits for the establishments. For some participants the entertainment value may be sufficient recompense; for others the impact may be more profound.
