Gambling Referendum In Greenbrier County Back On The Ballot
Voters in Greenbrier, West Virginia had their chance to legalize state sponsored gambling in their county. They turned down the idea with fifty eight percent of voters rejecting the referendum.
The Greenbrier County Commission feels like things may be different eight years later. They voted 3-0 on Thursday to put a gambling referendum back on the ballot in November.
The last time the referendum was voted on, the country was in a much better position economically. Some of the voters that voted against the referendum back in 2000 might be more likely to approve it this year.
If table games are approved for the county, the Greenbrier County of Labor would be ecstatic. They requested the referendum be put back on the ballot and feel that the table games would provide the necessary revenue to give the resorts union members the benefits that they are seeking.
"This may be the only salvation for our jobs and the county's largest employer," said union official Peter Bostic. The Green brier's contract with their union workers has already expired and they are in the process of negotiating a new deal.
