The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board's public roadshow is at an end - eight weeks, nine towns and almost 600 testifiers after it began. The timing and planning of the hearings was much-criticized. And the board has many gigantic tasks ahead if it expects to issue all 14 slot-machine gambling licenses this year.

But for the time being, the board is basking in the completion last week of 18 days of hearings that even some casino gambling opponents said were well-run and gave them the chance they sought to be heard. "The hearings were great for us," said Susan Star Paddock, the chairwoman of No Casino Gettysburg, one of the most outspoken anti-casino groups in Pennsylvania. Counting some relatively minor complaints and low expectations going into the hearings, "it was better than we expected," she added.
