Genting Has Big Plans For Casino Gambling In Miami
South Florida always seem like a logical place for the next Las Vegas in the US. The Sunshine State is rich in celebrities, hip nightspots, and gorgeous beaches. If Genting Malaysia has its way, Miami will be the new home of one of the "finest" casino resorts in the US.
The speculation began about the motives of Genting when they purchased the home of the Miami Herald earlier this year. The suspense ended yesterday when Genting unveiled their plans for a $3 billion Resorts World Miami. The mammoth project could be a game-changer in the entire US casino gambling industry.
"If you just drop a square box with slot machines and table games you won't have much of an economic impact," said Colin Au of the Genting Group, as reported by the Sun-Sentinel. "But we think this will be the finest resort in America."
Those are big expectations in a country that has seen major developmental casino resort projects over the past couple of years. The Genting project, however, would tower over the other facilities in terms of scope, if, of course, lawmakers in Florida give the company the green light for the casino.
Currently, casino gambling is only allowed on a small scale in the Sunshine State. Pari-mutuels and the Seminole Indians are allowed to offer slot machines and live poker. Additionally, the Seminoles have gained the right through a compact last year, to offer blackjack and baccarat at five of their seven Florida casinos.
The Seminoles will be watching very closely to the proposals that are set to be debated in Tallahassee this year. If lawmakers legalize full-scale casino gambling at resorts such as the one Genting is building, the Seminoles, by law, would also be allowed to offer table games such as craps and roulette at their casinos. The Seminoles also may be off the hook for the revenue they are sharing with the state if the compact terms are breached.
Genting is not building Resorts World Miami like a typical casino resort. Instead, the casino would be located on the third and fourth floor. Most resorts have their casinos on the ground floor, where customers have to pass through to and from their hotel rooms. The Genting project will have 5,200 rooms across four hotels on the Resorts property.
"The Genting proposal creates a unique policy decision for state lawmakers that will require balance between generating substantial slots revenue and creating a competitive environment where the destination casinos, pari-mutuel facilities, and Seminole Tribe can prosper," said gaming law expert John Lockwood.
