Grand Forks-Area Chamber Finds Casino Operation
GRAND FORKS, N. D. -
The area Chamber of Commerce president says businesses surveyed by the chamber are against a casino proposed by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa on the edge of the city.
Chamber President Dan Schenkein said about half those who voted "no" in the chamber survey said they did so because they did not have enough information. He interpreted that to mean a third of the businesses support the proposed casino, a third oppose it and a third oppose it for lack of information.
Schenkein said other reasons cited for opposition to the casino included the economic impact of gambling, moral opposition to it, and its impact on nonprofit groups that rely on gambling for revenue. The City Council has not yet taken an official position on the casino, though it has encouraged the tribe to continue exploring the idea.
