Great Joy and Celebration for Shabbona
Some area residents are not excited about the prospect of a casino near town, members of the Prairie Band Potawatomi and other Native Americans are ecstatic about the tribe's purchase of 128 acres. The farmland is within the boundaries of more than 1,200 acres, which were reserved by the 1829 Treaty of Prairie du Chien for Chief Shabbona and his band. The band is now recognized as the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. Members of the Potawatomi last week held a press conference officially announcing the purchase just outside of the village. About 100 people attended, including a handful of reporters, some members of the Prairie Band Potawatomi from Kansas and Shabbona residents.
