Greektown Hoping More Rooms Means More Gambling In Detroit
For the outsider that is visiting Detroit, Michigan, it will appear as though Greektown Casino has weathered the storm. Their new hotel will be open next week and the glitz and glamour will be on display.
The picture will not tell the entire story, however. Greektown is one of the casinos in the US that is holding on by a thread and they need the new hotel to succeed if they are going to continue to survive.
"Greektown Casino is number one, alive, we're not going out of business. Our construction is moving out of the streets and people can feel comfortable about coming back to Greektown once again," said casino spokesman Marvin Beatty.
Despite the optimism of Beatty, the fact remains that Greektown needs to quickly rediscover their customer base or else they will be financially unable to stay in business. The hotel is key to that process.
Greektown has been granted a loan in bankruptcy court for the completion of the hotel. The $46 million loan will need to be paid back, so customers, both old and new, are a must for Greektown.
The hotel has been in the works for ten years but there have been several setbacks along the way. Finally, next Friday, the 400 room hotel will open to the public. It will bring with it 250 new jobs, which is also big for the Detroit area.
