West Virginia is one of the states that has made major expansion efforts to their casino gaming industry. The Greenbrier is one of the most storied landmarks in the state, and soon will become known for its gambling options.

Greenbrier has made the commitment to build an underground casino and the project has been delayed by an unseasonal winter. Now, the hope is that the full casino will be up and operating by June, which will be a relief for those who have been waiting for the expanded gambling.

"Nobody expected to have one of the worst winters in West Virginia in recent history," said Todd Fishon, the Vice President of Casino Operations for Greenbrier, as reported by The Associated Press. "At the time when the weather hit, we were still trying to enclose it. We got behind. The extremely cold temperatures made it tough to pour cement. Every time it snowed, we had to dig ourselves out. Every snowstorm cost us a good week."

The good news is that in recent weeks, much progress has been made to the casino that will be housed at a place where presidents and kings have stayed. The casino is expected to bring millions of dollars into the facility and the state.

West Virginia has done what many other states have done in recent years, explore the possibility of full-scale casino gambling. The economic recession has caused lawmakers to look at casino gambling in a different light.

Revenue generated from casinos has helped several states avoid having to significantly cut their budgets. Florida, this week, became the latest state to add casino revenue to the budget when lawmakers approved a Seminole gaming compact on Tuesday.
