Gulf Coast Casinos Spreading New Wave of Gambling Excitement
The Gulf Coast Casinos were thrashed by Hurricane Katrina. Now, Mississippi Gulf Coast Casinos are reopening to returning crowds. A new law that allows gambling on solid ground is spreading a new wave of feaverish excitement.
In the days and weeks after the waters of Katrina swamped the Gulf Coast, tearing up casino barges, few could have imagined this so soon. Ten months after darkness fell on Biloxi, casinos are lighting up big from Florida, Alabama, and yes, devastated Mississippi.
3 gambling casinos have re-opened in Biloxi, which counts on casino gambling for more than 1/3 of its State tax revenue. An economy that disappeared instantly with Katrina dropping more than 15,000 jobs.
But now, the jobs are coming back. May's numbers were even better. 63 million. But how long will the good times roll, with competition and other challenges on the way?
Eight more casinos are planning to re-open by year's end, meaning jobs for thousands more dealers, wait staff and hotel workers. Where will they all live? After Katrina's destruction, affordable housing is in short supply. Nevertheless they are bringing down old damaged casinos to make way for the new, betting the future comes up a winner.
