Gulf Coast Tourism Industry Rebounding Strong
With nice beaches, championship golf courses and plenty of deep-sea fishing, the Gulf Coast area has attractions other places can only wish for. The gambling casinos are a stronghold here as well, evidenced by the mega-casinos taking shape on Gulf Coast today.
Gamblers have shown their loyalty to the Gulf Coast, and the casino gambling industry has definitely taken notice. Billions of dollars are being invested from Hancock County to D'Iberville, and Biloxi is the hub of it all. According to the governor of Mississippi, the Gulf Coast will soon rival Atlantic City.
The first casinos to reopen after the Katrina devistation, all in Biloxi, took back 54% of their pre-Katrina market share during their first month of operation. 3 casinos in January 2006 accounted for more 1/2 the money made by 12 casinos in January 2005.
The numbers have held steady, with the market share reaching 60 percent by midsummer. This month's reopening of Grand Casino Biloxi and Beau Rivage should put the market closer to pre-Katrina levels.
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has said the Coast can someday rival Atlantic City. Community leaders have set specific goals for making the Coast a "Tier One" tourism destination. Front-line hospitality workers are doing their part to make it happen.
Mississippi was considered a good place for casinos to do business before the hurricane because of its stable regulatory environment, low tax rate and open-market approach to licensing.
