Harry Reid, New Senate Majority Leader : Proponent of Gambling
The American people expressed their strong disapproval for the current state of American affairs Tuesday by voting out the Republican majority in both the House of Representatives and the United States Senate.
Exit polls showed a strong disapproval for the war in Iraq and corruption in the US government as reasons why they came out to vote. Unfortunately, the corruption they voted out may be replaced by more corruption with the entrance of new Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Harry Reid is a Democrat from Nevada who was responsible for regulating gambling in his home state. Although he is anti-abortion and some gun control laws, he is considered a liberal Democrat.
He is replacing one Bill Frist, who is known for closing back room deals, however, Reid is considered to be much better as a back room deal closer than Frist. He also has been accused of corruption many times in the past, as has Frist.
Reid allegedly violated Senate ethics rules when he failed to report a real estate transaction in Las Vegas that netted him more than $1.1 million in 2004. The latest allegations against Reid have him giving Christmas bonuses to Ritz Carlton employees using campaign donations.
In a time when the Democrats are making a strong stance against corruption, Harry Reid may soften that effect.
The online gambling community is also wondering what effect Harry Reid will have on their state of affairs. Will his connection with Las Vegas brick and mortar casinos lead to ambitions to regulate Internet gambling, or further prohibit Internet gambling? The answer is most likely that he will do whatever benefits land based casinos most.
