Heavy Hitters Coming Out In Massachusetts Casino Debate
Massachusetts lawmakers have been discussing the possibility of casino gambling since Governor Duval Patrick took office. Now that Patrick has brought the issue to the forefront, some of the biggest names in the industry are joining the fight.
It is expected that in the Fall there will be full debates involving casino expansion. How to expand and how full scale the gambling, will be the main issues. Patrick ran his campaign on a platform largely dedicated to bringing casino resorts to Massachusetts.
His first attempts have stalled in the legislature, but he vowed to bring the issue back. Steve Wynn, one of the biggest casino developers in the world, has hired a lobbyist and has also sent a representative to the state to speak with lawmakers.
The Mohegan Tribe is another group that has plans of building a casino resort in Massachusetts. They have already targeted an area near the Massachusetts Turnpike for their casino.
Boyd Gaming has hired a lobbyist, and Station Casinos Inc. are hoping to get in on the action as well. There are many companies who believe Massachusetts could be the best place on the East Coast for casino gambling.
Lawmakers in the state, however, still need to be persuaded before any of this gambling becomes a reality. Many of these lawmakers have shown a willingness to keep the state casino-free. They have expressed concern regarding all of the out of state companies coming in with their ideas for casinos.
