Historic Day As Table Game Gambling Begins In Delaware
Decades from now, gaming analysts may look back and say that Friday was the day that changed the casino industry in the Northeast forever. The winds of change have now officially blew through Delaware, and the state has announced itself as a major player in the gaming industry.
The anticipation had been building all week at Harrington Raceway and Casino in preparation of table game gambling. While the games had been taking place at low limits all week, it was Friday that marked the first day of full scale table game betting in the state of Delaware.
Twenty-four hours a day gamblers will be able to enjoy games such as blackjack, roulette, and craps. That is in addition to the poker and slot machine gambling that will take place at Harrington year-round. The increased gambling is Delaware's first attempt to become the gaming capital of the East Coast.
In the past year, Delaware lawmakers have legalized not only table games for casinos in the state, but also sports betting. They are the only state in the country other than Nevada that can claim they offer both full-scale casino gambling and sports betting.
"This is a historic day for the state of Delaware," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "Other states are moving in the same direction as Delaware, but none have gotten to where they are going as fast as this state. This will give them some time to establish themselves as the place to be to enjoy casino gambling."
Delaware's may be first, but Pennsylvania is not far behind. Pennsylvania lawmakers approved table games earlier this year, and by July 4th, most casinos in Pennsylvania will be running table games as well. New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, are all states that have had discussions about increased casino gambling in the past several months.
On the East Coast, Florida may also be poised to become a gaming haven. The Sunshine State has legislators that just approved a gambling compact with the Seminole Indians, and the big Las Vegas corporations are making a play to build full-scale casino resorts on Florida's beaches.
