House Speaker Resignation Paves Way For Casino Gambling In Mass.

Governor Duval Patrick ran for office in Massachusetts on a platform of expanded casino gambling. While the public was behind Patrick, one powerful man, House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi was not.
DiMasi was key in having Patrick's casino gambling proposal shot down. Now, the key figure in that denial is stepping down from his position of power.
DiMasi has announced that he will resign his position of House Speaker on Tuesday. The announcement comes with allegations swirling that a close friend of DiMasi used the leaders position to have ticket scalping legislation passed in the state.
With DiMasi out of the picture, Patrick will be able to again pursue leglaized casino gambling in Massachusetts. The delay in the process could have cost the state dearly with neighboring states moving towards expanded casinos.
Lobbyists who have already been working hard to have casino legislation are relieved that a major roadblock is now out of their way. When DiMasi won re-election, casino proponents felt deflated, but now that door has swung wide open.
Richard Vitale is the friend in question. allegations have surfaced that imply Vitale has concealed his work as a lobbyist. He pushed legislation for ticket brokers in the state. He also is accused of paying off $7,500 in legal debts for DiMasi's in-laws.
