The 2010 CMA awards have come to Nashville on Wednesday evening and nobody is happier about that than the casinos in Illinois. While gamblers have flown if for the awards, they have also spent several days at the casinos this week.
On Wednesday night, thousands of music fans packed into Bridgestone Arena expecting to see a dazzling night of music and award presentations from this year's hottest country music stars. The4 celebrities from yesteryear are here as well, and combined, the star power and energy will provide for an electric night.
In Illinois, the scene will be much calmer, but casinos in the state will be a little more busy than usual. In fact, all week there has been an increase in patrons thanks to the short, two and a half hour drive from Nashville to the closest casino in Illinois. Thousands of extra revenue dollars have been generated in the past week.
"I actually flew into Illinois and have stayed for the past four days near the casinos," said Paul Howler. "Today, I left Illinois and made the trip to Nashville and I got here in plenty of time to enjoy the show tonight. It was great that I could have a vacation involving both the CMA's and gambling."
Illinois casinos have experienced a similar fate to casinos in other states in recent years. The economy has hurt business, and a recent law that allows bards to offer video gambling machines also puts a damper on future expectations. Individual towns were able to ban the video gaming machines, but some that needed the revenue chose not to enact the ban.
Tennessee, the site of the CMA's, has lagged behind other states when it comes to gambling expansion. Only in recent years has the state adopted a state lottery. The lottery is bringing in millions of dollars, and with millions more being lost to Mississippi and Illinois in casino gambling funds, lawmakers may soon look to expand even further.
