Illinois Posts Record Tax Revenues from Legalized Gambling
The state of Illinois is reporting record tax revenue from land-based casino gambling and state lottery sales. According to the state budget office, they collected $1.40 billion dollars in taxes during a 12-month period ending this past July from lotteries and legalized gambling entities. It was a three percent year-over-year increase, and 8th straight annual increase.
According to analysts, the boost in tax revenues comes from ever-expanding lottery sales and a recent recovery by area gambling barges, also known as riverboats.
State lottery officials tribute the increase to a strong advertising effort geared at bringing in new customers, as well as several new lottery games aimed at keeping interest strong. For example, the Millionaire's Club "instant-win-game" offers several $1 million lucky chances.
In an interview, Lottery superintendent Carolyn Adams said, "The state of Illinois is always looking to expand the lottery portfolio".
She continued to say, "In order to see growth in tax-revenue, we cannot be sluggish. We have to use aggressive marketing campaigns."
As for the riverboats, they continue to post strong numbers. Promotional efforts and better marketing have led to a resurgence in their businesses. Slot-machines are a key engine generating revenue for the state of Illinois.
