Indian Tribe Casino Gambling Survives Battle With Lawmakers
An attempt to forbid Indian Tribes from developing casino gambling locations off-reservation was unsuccessful today on the House floor. Republican lawmakers fought hard in the battle to stop "Reservation Shopping", but lost 247-171 in the vote.
No surprise that top indian tribes across the nation were opposed to the proposed bill, while Democrats said the new gambling bill would impose upon the tribes right to self-govern themselves.
According to Republicans, "This bill has a basic purpose: Indian Tribe casino gambling should occur on Indian lands". Currently, Indian Tribes are eligible to bring casino gambling to any state where gambling has been legalized in some form or another (i.e. lotteries, dog tracks, horse racing, etc.) as long as they can get approval from the local gaming boards.
Very few of the nearly 225 tribes that manage casino gambling sites have succeeded in moving their casinos to locations away from their reservations. Over the past few years, the number of tribes attempting that is growing fast.
The proposed bill would have amended the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and would disallow indian tribes the right to build casinos off their reservation. For now, "Reservation Shopping" remains fair game for the tribes.
