Indiana Casino Crushes Last Year's Gambling Revenue Figures
The Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana, is bucking the trend when it comes to casino gambling revenue in the US. While many casinos around the country are struggling to stay open, the Horseshoe is actually dwarfing revenue numbers from last year.
The April revenue figures have been released by the state and while Indiana's other ten casinos have experienced a loss in business, the Horseshoe is thriving. So much so, that they pulled in $49.2 million in April compared to $40.5 million in the same month in 2008.
"Horseshoe has so many more amenities to offer people, making them one of the biggest players in the Chicago market," said Ed Feigenbaum, Editor of the Indiana Gaming Insight newsletter, "No doubt the expansion had an impact."
The Horseshoe expansion happened to the tune of $485 million. That was the cost of a new gambling barge last summer. Since the expansion, the casino has steadily been picking up new customers.
There is another reason that business has picked up at the casino. The Empress Casino in Joliet, Illinois, had to close in March due to a fire. That has caused a big revenue increase at the Horseshoe.
The April figures were actually a decrease over March, although it was only a small decline. Over all, the casino has not much as far as revenue to complain about. Other casinos, meanwhile, are in the same boat as most casinos in the country, losing revenue by the month.
