Indiana Moving Up The List Of Top Casino Destinations In The US
Indiana may not be the first state that people think about when they list the top casino gambling destinations in the US, but it may soon be statistically that good. In 2009, Indiana passed Mississippi to become the third largest casino gaming destination in the country.
Indiana had revenue of $2.58 billion in 2009. That compares favorably to the $2.46 billion that was made at Mississippi casinos. Nevada and New jersey remained the top two states on the list.
The economy has taken a toll on the entire casino industry over the past couple of years, and Mississippi has been among the states hit the hardest. While the Gulf Coast continues to rebound from Hurricane Katrina that hit several years ago, the rest of the country is building their casino industries from scratch.
"What is amazing for Indiana is that they have surpassed Mississippi with seventeen less state-licensed casinos," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "The truth is that there are some big cities located near casinos in Indiana, and that helps out a great deal."
The list of top casino destinations could change drastically over the next few years. Pennsylvania has become a major player in the gaming industry in the Northeast, with lawmakers legalizing table games earlier this year.
Ohio, Maryland, New York, Delaware, Florida, and California are just some of the states that have added casinos or lightened gambling laws. All of the changes should lead to some big competition to become a leader in the casino industry.
