Jerry Lewis has been raising money for Muscular Dystrophy for over forty years and on Sunday night, Lewis kicked off the Jerry Lewis Telethon 2010, in which tens of millions of dollars was expected to be raised. The telethon will go on for twenty-one hours, showing the kind of resolve seen mainly at online poker tables.

Lewis himself can no longer host the show for the entire time. At the age of eighty-four, Lewis will receive help from guest emcees that will assist the iconic comedian in raising what is projected to be over $60 million. The telecast will have many of Lewis' show business friends stopping by along the way.

The length of the telethon has some people comparing it to playing in an online poker tournament. The tournaments can sometimes go on for hours at a time, and only the most disciplined of players can survive the grind. Lewis has brought that kind of dedication to his telecast for the past forty-five years.

Lewis first started the telethon back in New York City, but this year the event is taking place in Las Vegas. Stars that have come to Sin City to make an appearance on the telecast include Ray Romano, Lynyrd Synyrd, and the entire cast of Glee. American Idol will also be well represented, with David Archuleta and Nigel Lythgoe helping out.

The funds that Lewis has raised through the telethon's over the years has reached the hundreds of millions range. Celebrities donate to the cause, and hotlines are set up for the general public to contribute as well. Several decades ago, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. were part of the show, and now young stars such as Archuleta are hoping to help reach the younger crowd.

Las Vegas has been slow for several years, but big events such as the Lewis telethon still seek out Sin City as a primary location to hold their conventions and benefits. The convention centers in Las Vegas are second to none in the country, and the city and its atmosphere is a benefit when trying to lure celebrities to take part in such events.
