It has been years since Kansas residents voted to allow casinos in their state. Now, after a long, torturous, journey, the first of the four state-owned casinos in Kansas may be only one week away from opening.
Dodge City is the only one of the three approved zones where there has been any casino construction going on in the state. Today, Butler National Corp., the group building and operating the casino, received approval from the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission.
Boot Hill Casino and Resort must now hold two days worth of trials, on which the Racing Commission will give the final approval that the casino can open to the public. If all goes well, (and that is a big if for anyone who has been following casino gambling expansion in Kansas), then the casino could be open in the next week.
The day that Kansas residents have dreamed about has finally arrived, and Dodge City gamblers are excited about the possibility to be the first big winners in the state.
"We have been waiting so long, it got to a point where we didn't think it would ever happen," said Brenda Lawrence, "Now that the day is close, we can't wait to go and play some slot machines and enjoy the new casino."
Residents of the other three zones that were approved for casinos are not as lucky. Those zones have not even had construction start, and a couple of the zones still do not have developers for their casino.
The Kansas Lottery had a miserable time the first time through the process trying to find developers. Three of the four developers that agreed to deals, reneged on the days shortly after the economic recession hit the US.
