The state of Kansas has not been the model that other states would follow if they were to add casinos. On Tuesday, another casino project for the state was put on hold for at least another sixty days.

Developers for the Chisholm Creek Casino Resort project have been back and forth with regulators for quite some time now in negotiating and re-negotiating the terms of the deal that would allow the company to operate a state owned casino in Kansas. On Tuesday the company asked for, and received, a sixty day delay before regulators will approve the new casino project.

Regulators appeared frustrated by the request, but understood they did not have much choice but approve the delay. Chisholm Creek had threatened to walk away from the $225 million project if the delay was not granted.

The state has already had their share of developers who have turned their back on casino projects. After the first round of bidding for the right to operate four state-owned casino, three of the developers pulled out of their deals. The economic recession was sited as the reason for these breaches in contract.

The developer is concerned over a pending decision that could bring a a second casino to the Wichita area. The Wyandotte Nation is negotiating to build a casino, and if approved, that casino could cut into the potential profits of the Chisholm Creek Casino Resort.

Dodge City is currently the only of the four approved zones that has an operational casino. The process of selecting developers the second time has taken years for the other three zones, and the delay has cost the state millions of dollars in gambling tax revenue.
