Kansas Moves Along In Casino Developer Choice In Wichita
The state of Kansas has had a miserable time trying to find developers for their four state-owned casinos that were approved by voters several years ago. Now, it appears that a deal for a Wichita-area casino is close.
Kansas Lottery Executive Director Ed Van Patten claims that the state and the Chisholm Creek partnership have been working towards an agreement that would allow the group to build a casino in Sumner County. Mulvane would be the exact location of the casino, if a deal is struck.
Chisholm Creek had proposed a $225 million casino facility, but in December they asked for time from the Lottery to tweak the proposal. The delay was granted, and the state and the partnership group have been working on a solution since.
Kansas had three of the four chosen developers back out of agreements last year because of the economic conditions in the US. Dodge City is the only location where a casino is currently open in the state.
In Wyandotte County, Penn National is set to bring a casino to the Kansas Speedway, but the development company is waiting for the Lottery to conduct a background check. The governor has granted an extension for that check to be completed.
Kansas voters approved four state-owned casinos, but the state is looking for outside developers to build and operate the casinos. The Chisholm Creek group and the Lottery could wrap up their negotiations within weeks.
