Kansas New Gambling Bill Signed Today, Goes Into Effect April 18
Kansas governor, Kathleen Sebelius, today signed a new gambling bill into law that will allow up to 2,800 slot machines to be divided between The Woodlands, Wichita Greyhound Park and the Camptown Greyhound Park in Frontenac, Kansas. The new law is expected to take effect April 18, 2007 and the slot machines could be up and running at the state casinos and parks by the end of the year.
Sebelius also announced today that she will send a challenge to the Supreme Court against the bill so that the investors looking to spend more than $200 million won't have to worry about challenges in the future.
"If you're asking investors to come forward and make a minimum $225 million investment, they need to know that they're on strong legal grounds, so I think the faster we can get a ruling from the Supreme Court, the better off we'll be," Sebelius said during a bill-signing ceremony at The Woodlands dog track.
The challenges are expected to be denied by the state Supreme Court, which would mean the new law would hold long term merit.
Gov. Sebelius also said she would like trailer bills to clarify how the money from the casinos will be distributed throughout the state. The bill is expected to bring in more than $200 million a year to the state and will allow the government to not raise taxes for its citizens.
The goal of the new casinos is to attract out of state tourists and the new law allows for such resorts to be built.
