Kansas Speedway Joins Back Up For Casino Circus In Kansas
Two years have gone by since the state of Kansas approved four casinos to be built. On Monday, the saga that could one day become casino gambling in the state took another turn.
The Kansas Speedway applied for a license to run one of the state owned casinos just a few months after they pulled their initial application. In November, the Speedway and partner Cordish Co. pulled their application because of the economy.
Now, the economy is in worst shape than it was back in November, but the Speedway has decided it is time to try again for the license. There was widespread speculation that they would have been approved last time around.
The new proposal will be almost exactly the same as the last proposal. It still is slated to be a $680 million facility, but the only difference is this time, the developers want to build the facility in stages instead of all at once.
The proposal from the Kansas Speedway and the Cordish Co. comes just two days before the deadline to submit applications for casino development in Wyandotte and Sumner Counties. Equity Ventures is expected to submit an application for Sumner County.
Kansas had originally authorized four state owned casinos. The application process had been long and grueling, but eventually four developers were chosen. Three of the four developers have since backed out of their agreements, leaving the state to start the process all over in those three counties.
