Kansas To Know Sumner Casino Fate In December, Barring Delay
Forgive the people of Sumner County, Kansas if they are skeptical about what they were told today regarding the future of casino gambling. The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission has set the schedule for finalizing a casino for the county, but they have been here before.
Sumner County is one of four chosen locations where a developer was awarded a casino contract the first time through the process. Like three other counties in Kansas, Sumner also was disappointed when their developer bailed on them.
That is why this time around residents are being a little more cautious in listening to what they are being told. The Lottery Review Board will hold a public hearing on September 16th. Then, in October the findings of that meeting will be delivered to the Lottery Review Board. In December, the board will take a final vote.
"That seems like a lot of steps that still need to be completed before we (Sumner County) receive our casino," said Byron Blastel, "I can only hope that there are no more delays. We have been waiting for quite some time now."
It has been years since the voters approved four state-owned casinos in Kansas. The economy crashed shortly after the four developers were chosen, and three pulled out of their deals. That created another entire round of bidding. In Sumner, there was only one proposal left by the end of the process, and it was approved earlier this week.
