Kentucky Tracks Will Feel Effects Of Casino Gambling Next Year

The state of Kentucky, stuck with [principles that were applied fifty years ago, will begin to see the error of their ways next summer. The once proud racetracks in Kentucky will be losing customers to neighboring Indiana.

The state of Indiana has approved slot gambling at their state racetracks. That is gong to make Indiana Downs and Hoosier Downs much more attractive to people looking to have a day at the races.

In between races and once the races have ended, people are becoming accustomed to having the right to play slot machines. It has become almost necessary in this day and age for racetracks to have the accompanying casino gambling to go with their races.

The state of Kentucky has resisted this change, however, and it will be the racetracks that feel the consequences. Owners of these tracks have already begun preparing for the revenue drop.

"Kentucky has allowed all of our surrounding states to use alternative gaming at racetracks to supplement their total operations as well as greatly improve their purses," said Ron Geary, owner of Ellis Park.

Complicating matters more for these racetrack owners is Governor Steve Beshear's sudden insistence on interfering with online gaming. Churchill Downs relies heavily on wagering coming in from the Internet, and Beshear's actions against online gambling sites could have an impact on Churchill Downs.

"Churchill Downs will no doubt be hurt by the governor's actions. He has set a precedent by claiming online gambling is dangerous to children, and that same approach applies to horse racing. It is a dangerous tactic he has decided to use," said Gregory Truman, a native Kentuckian.
