LA Tribe Pursues Hollywood Park Gambling Proposal

An LA county indian tribe is hoping to get permission to establish a Native American gambling casino at the Inglewood Hollywood Park racetrack.

The proposal, which was developed by local attorney Jonathan Stein, seeks to get the Gabrielino-Tongva Band permission to launch a gambling site at Hollywood Park.

The proposal does face major legal challenges, however. Some say, the proposal has very little political support in the Legislature.

The Gabrielino-Tongva, an indian tribe with several factions that claim greater Los Angeles as aboriginal lands, is not recognized by the US federal government, a pre-requisite to have land taken into trust, which is generally required to conduct Native American casino gambling.

The Gabrielino-Tongva was recognized by the state of Californina twelve years ago. A number of other states also recognize the tribe, but the right to conduct Indian gambling is limited by federal law to federally recognized tribes.
